Summary:In the search of the components of traditional housing sustainability, the paper inquires about the concepts and empirical evidence of utility. It gave an organized and critical outlook of the accumulated knowledge, in order to contribute with the hypothesis verification and method adaptation to the different disciplines. In the research, it was found a wellknown but least explored way; when studying the concepts in their original discourses, an interesting set of approaches, criticisms and debates were found. They were clasified based on the environmental, economic, social, cultural, and institutional sustainability standpoints. Such a diversity allowed the definition of criteria for each one of the perspectives and the recognition of techniques, in order to measure traditional housing sustainability. At the same time, the study detected a vast number of empty discourses that use the concept as a trend, without any significant contribution.
