Sammanfattning:This paper summarizes the dissertation for a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management and Urban Development at the School of Architecture, National University of Cordoba, in November 2002. It seeks to develop new guidelines for local tourism development. In view of the negative impacts of the prevailing economydriven and product-oriented marketing strategies in tourism, this research contends that strategies based on sustainable and environmental management approaches are capable of giving a new direction to tourism development processes. In the light of the conceptual and methodological considerations in its environmental epistemic framework, the research concludes that a sustainable development approach can become the basis for redefining, restructuring and relaunching of touristic areas in the Province of Cordoba. It is clear that there will be no effective perspective to tourism development without maximizing tourists’ satisfaction and the living standards of the local population and simultaneously minimizing the impacts on local environmental systems. Sustainable tourism can meet economic, social, aesthetical, cultural and recreational requirements while decisively contributing to the preservation of cultural integrity and ecological processes. It requires political decision-making based on the consensus of all the economic, social and environmental actors.
