Human environment Sustainability Environmental Management Sustainable Tourism This paper summarizes the dissertation for a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management and Urban Development at the School of Architecture, National University of Cordoba, in November 2002. It seeks to develop new guidelines for local tourism development. In view of the negative impacts of the prevailing economydriven and product-oriented marketing strategies in tourism, this research contends that strategies based on sustainable and environmental management approaches are capable of giving a new direction to tourism development processes. In the light of the conceptual and methodological considerations in its environmental epistemic framework, the research concludes that a sustainable development approach can become the basis for redefining, restructuring and relaunching of touristic areas in the Province of Cordoba. It is clear that there will be no effective perspective to tourism development without maximizing tourists’ satisfaction and the living standards of the local population and simultaneously minimizing the impacts on local environmental systems. Sustainable tourism can meet economic, social, aesthetical, cultural and recreational requirements while decisively contributing to the preservation of cultural integrity and ecological processes. It requires political decision-making based on the consensus of all the economic, social and environmental actors. La investigación se plantea formular nuevas orientaciones para el desarrollo turístico local. Frente a los efectos negativos de las estrategias economicistas y de marketing productivista imperantes en el mercado turístico, se plantea que los enfoques de sustentabilidad y gestión ambiental constituyen perspectivas estratégicas capaces de reorientar los procesos de desarrollo turístico. A la luz de consideraciones conceptuales y metodológicas dentro del marco epistémico de racionalidad ambiental, se concluye que el enfoque de desarrollo sustentable puede convertirse en base de redefinición, reestructuración y relanzamiento de áreas turísticas de la Provincia de Córdoba. Resulta claro que no hay perspectiva efectiva para el desarrollo turístico si no se busca simultáneamente la maximización de la satisfacción del turista y de la calidad de vida del habitante local con un mínimo impacto sobre la integridad de los sistemas ambientales locales. El desarrollo turístico sustentable puede satisfacer requerimientos económicos, sociales, estético-culturales recreativos al tiempo que contribuir decisivamente al mantenimiento de la integridad cultural y de los procesos ecológicos, requiriendo la toma de decisiones políticas basadas en acuerdos y coincidencias de los diversos actores en materia económica, social y ambiental.
