With the appearance of the first computers in history, a range of new possibilities was present in contemporary society, generating a whole variety of new scenarios, both for research and for teaching. A new way of seeing and understanding the world was born, with strong technological changes and an unusual access to different fields of knowledge, generating a process called Alvin Toffler’s “Future Shock”. Conservation and rehabilitation of the architectural and urban heritage are not exempt from new approaches in this context. Their specific field is being influenced by new theories and technologies. From these assumptions, and with a look that focuses on digital technology, this paper aims to show the advantages of its use as an exploratory tool for complex structures, able to build and relate simplified representations of the real world, helping to understand, investigate and interpret the architectural and urban qualities of a city in a determinate historical period. To do so, case-studies are proposed, exploiting the potential of an efficient and functional instrument of analysis, which contributes to the collective construction of knowledge for future generations. Con la aparición de las primeras computadoras de la historia, un abanico de nuevas posibilidades se hacía presente en la sociedad contemporánea, generando toda una gama de novedosos escenarios, tanto para la investigación como para la enseñanza. Un nuevo modo de ver y entender el mundo había nacido, con fuertes cambios tecnológicos y una inusitada accesibilidad hacia diferentes campos del saber, generando un proceso que Alvin Toffler denominó el “Shock del futuro”. En este contexto, la conservación y rehabilitación del patrimonio arquitectónico y urbano, no se encuentran exentas de nuevos planteos. Influenciada por nuevas teorías y tecnologías, ve cuestionadas su especificidad, adoptando saberes de diversos campos. A partir de estos supuestos, y con una mirada que hace foco en la tecnología digital, este trabajo tiene como objetivo exponer las ventajas de su uso, como una herramienta exploratoria de estructuras complejas, capaz de construir y relacionar representaciones simplificadas del mundo real, que nos ayuden a comprender, investigar e interpretar las cualidades arquitectónicas y urbanísticas de una ciudad, en un periodo histórico determinado. Para ello, se propone el estudio de casos, aprovechando las potencialidades de un instrumento de análisis eficiente y funcional, que contribuya en la construcción colectiva del conocimiento para las futuras generaciones.
