The paper analyzes the problems and results of significant schematic design competitions for gas stations called by YPF (1936), and ACA (1937), problematizing the question of construction of an identity, in full search of a language for a new architectural program born along the popularization of the automotive. In 1937 Vilar, winner of the ACA competition, received the commission to develop a vast plan of design and construction of stations of various scales, which will be deployed throughout the country in the next six years. From hemerographic material, the schematic designs presented to both competitions are comparatively studied. The outstanding role of the morphological language used is presented, with an imprint of technical-functional efficiency that fuses adequately with the modern mechanical ideas of the time. Thus, Vilar´s “pragmatic” architecture becomes a fundamental element in the construction of a collective imaginary of strong symbolic charge. En el plan de expansión llevado adelante por Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) conjuntamente con el Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA) a partir de 1936 en la Argentina, la arquitectura de Antonio Vilar jugó un rol fundamental en la definición de la imagen institucional de este último y la instalación de una morfología arquitectónica moderna asociada al automóvil. El trabajo analiza la problemática y resultados de sendos concursos de anteproyectos para estaciones de servicio convocados por YPF (1936), y el ACA (1937), problematizando la cuestión de construcción de identidad, en plena búsqueda de un lenguaje adecuado para un nuevo programa arquitectónico nacido a partir de la popularización del automotor. En 1937 Vilar, ganador del concurso del ACA, recibirá el encargo para desarrollar un vasto plan de proyecto y construcción de estaciones de diversas escalas, las cuales se irán desplegando por todo el país. A partir de material hemerográfico, se estudian comparativamente los anteproyectos presentados a ambos concursos. Se plantea el rol destacado del lenguaje morfológico utilizado, con una impronta de eficiencia técnico-funcional que se fusiona adecuadamente con el ideario mecánico moderno de la época. Así, la arquitectura “pragmática” de Vilar deviene elemento fundamental en la construcción de un imaginario colectivo de fuerte carga simbólica. Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata.
