Faced with this situation, the concern for the environment has been recognized as a new social paradigm. The importance for the University to train professionals as a part of its teaching, research and cultural activities, places this institution as an strategic value to the sustainable development of societies; however, there has been a delay by unam in the institutional response to the challenge of incorporating the environmental dimension to all its substantive functions, situation that is discussed in this article. La Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México festeja 100 años de su refundación. Sin duda ha cumplido de manera eficiente su papel de conciencia crítica y creadora, siendo un sector estratégico para el desarrollo de nuestro país. La Universidad ha actuado como motor de avance de la sociedad al tener una visión intrínseca del futuro, abrir nuevos campos en el conocimiento (ciencia y tecnología) y cuestionar la forma en que la sociedad se organiza y se entiende a sí misma, pero a la vez se ha visto influida de manera fundamental por esa sociedad que la contiene y le proporciona el sustento material, ideológico e histórico que la hace ser diferente en cada época para poder responder a sus problemas y retos más apremiantes.
