These intellectuals who wrote on the first half of the XX century, seem to be linked in a net of common references that determine the image of an idyllic world which suffers serious blows when, on one hand there is the modification of the methods of sugar production in the region and on the other hand, when the city of Recife is going through a process of modernization that modifies the traditional relations. We will deal here about the ways how they express the changes that – following the process of transformation of nature, the introduction of new relations of production and the decline of its traditional social leading circles in the ensemble of the national economy and politics – the rivers undergo in the XX century. Este artículo intenta reconstruir los significados que los ríos asumen para los intelectuales nacidos en Recife (Pernambuco), los cuales mantienen fuertes vínculos con la sociedad agraria tradicional de los productores de azúcar, los “senhores de engenho”. Esos intelectuales, escribiendo en la primera mitad del siglo veinte, parecen estar unidos en una red de referencias comunes que fijan la imagen de un mundo idílico que sufre graves golpes cuando, por un lado, ocurre la modificación de los métodos de producción del azúcar en la región y, por otro, cuando la ciudad de Recife vive un proceso de modernización que modifica las relaciones tradicionales. Trataremos, aquí, de los modos como ellos expresan los cambios que –siguiendo el proceso de trasformación de la naturaleza, la introducción de nuevas relaciones de producción y el declino de sus elites tradicionales en el conjunto de la economía y de la política nacional– sufren los ríos en el siglo XX.
