In this work, we investigate how the choice of strategic territories in the city is associated to changes in the pattern of economic development. For this, we study the association between the economic and urban dynamics of Natal city in two moments of its history: one, when the river is prioritized and another, in which the sea is prioritized. Our hypothesis is that the valorization of urban territories corresponds to strategies of economic development connected to the interests of dominant social sectors. This way, this valorization is not just related to the economic functionality of the space, but also to the local interests’ games. De una ciudad establecida a lo largo del principal río que la baña a una ciudad dirigida al mar, Natal tiene alterado su lógica de estructuración urbana en diferentes momentos de su historia en sintonía con transformaciones observadas en el ámbito económico. En este trabajo investigamos de que modo la elección de territorios estratégicos en la ciudad está asociada a transformaciones en la forma de desarrollo económico. Para eso, analizamos la relación entre las dinámicas urbana y económica de la ciudad Natal en dos momentos de su historia: uno en que se privilegia el río y otro en que se privilegia el mar. Nuestra hipótesis es que la valorización de territorios urbanos corresponde a estrategias de desarrollo económico vinculadas a los intereses de los sectores predominantes. De este modo, está relacionada no sólo a la “funcionalidad” económica del territorio, pero también a los intereses en juego.
