El advenimiento de la luz eléctrica, a finales del siglo xix, transfiguró la aparienciade las ciudades durante la noche convirtiéndolas en un gigantesco escaparate brillante. El espectáculo del nocturno urbano intensificó la fantasmagoríade la ciudad moderna, caracterizada por una doble topografía entre la oscuridad y la iluminación, el miedo y la euforia. Se preparaba el terreno para la sociedad del espectáculo con uno de sus ingredientes clave:la devoción paralizante por lo tecnológico.
