Shrnutí: | The work of Luciano Kulczewski, one of the most important Chilean architects of the first half of the past century, stands out essentially for the originality of his formal approach. If in a compositional sense his creations give account of the arrival of the architectural avant-gardes to the national milieu, his use of the stylistic repertoire is far from being attached to the canons established for those languages. The dominant eclectic spirit of his buildings was shaped after a formal syncretism, quoting not only the styles in vogue at that time—Picturesque Revival, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Nationalist Restoration—but also including his personal imagery inhabited by bizarre figures, close in their sensitivity to the oneiric world and the Grutesco. The peculiar amalgamation of imageries, along with architectural references to high and low culture, seen from the distance of the present, emerged as gestures very close to current postmodern sensibility. This would explain the great popularity enjoyed by his creations among the general public, which acknowledges their originality and singularity in the local context. Moving away from the traditional stylistic studies that refer to the proposals that came from the metropolitan centre, this article will delve into the process of stylistic contamination reflected on the architect’s creations, understanding that they were the result of an appropriation strategy. |
