As such, the article hereby is a result of the research project «Strengthening the Main Ecological Structure through Identification and Selection of Species for Urban Tree-Planting», conducted in seven Colombian cities between 2006 and 2088. Inicialmente, el artículo presenta el estado actual de la arborización de la ciudad de Ibagué, lo que incluye un listado de las especies nativas y exóticas que cuentan con poblaciones representativas en el espacio público. A continuación se presentan los criterios para la selección de especies que fortalecen la Estructura Ecológica Principal- EEP, las especies seleccionadas y recomendadas, así como los beneficios ecológicos que aporta cada una de ellas. El artículo es uno de los resultados de la investigación "Fortalecimiento de la EEP a partir de la identificación y selección de especies para la arborización urbana", la cual se adelantó entre 2006 y 2008 en siete ciudades colombianas.
