Zusammenfassung:The research deals with the problem of the unsustainability of the spontaneous edges in the intermediate Latin American cities, whose informality has determined a discontinuous growth, low densities, and a lack of infrastructures and facilities; to those
there will be are added the future, natural disasters risks associated with climate change. To address this, the main objective
of this paper is to contribute to the study of the spontaneous edges of Latin American cities, from a sustainable development framework, with a focus on the physical, environmental and climatic dimension. The research is organized in three parts: review and analysis of existing information on the subject and experts’ advice, for the criteria determination; the identi cation of priority actions; and a proposal for a new structure that supports a system of indicators. The results of the work are summarized in a set of thirty-nine (39) reference indicators, articulated in four subsystems related to: environmental-physical and climatic vulnerability, environmental axis, urban development and social cohesion, which is the main conclusion for the beginning of the rst decisions to be taken, against the problem of this type of peripheries.
