Summary:This article discusses different aspects of natural disasters in Peru over the last decades, due to the fact that the territorial features of this country result in a permanent natural risk that threatens its geography, where cities suffer part of the most important catastrophes. For this reason, this article suggests the need for a disaster prevention policy to foresee and mitigate the impact of these disasters, highlighting the idea that this is a mission for all members of society, and putting forward the role of urban and territorial planning as a tool for prevention.An important part of this investigation is the result of innumerable actions taken by the State and by different private and public civil organizations of the Republic.
