In Chile, the present process of agricultural modernization starting in the 80's is gradually changing the historical pattern of rural population settlements, encouraging the formation of small size rural villages which are functional as regards modernization since their inhabitants work in fruit plantations and forest resources. Los asentamientos humanos de América Latina, han sido caracterizados por una marcada concentración geográfica de la población en torno a uno o dos centros urbanos de gran dinamismo, en tanto la población rural se dispersa dentro de territorios altamente subo-cupados. En Chile, el actual proceso de modernización del agro que se inicia en la década del 80, está modificando gradualmente el patrón histórico de asentamiento de la población rural, estimulando la formación de villorrios o aldeas rurales de pequeño tamaño y funcionales a la modernización, por cuanto sus habitantes gravitan en torno a las actividades más dinámicas, desempeñándose en gran parte como temporeros de la fruticultura o silvicultura. Asumiendo que se trata de una tendencia irreversible en las áreas modernizadas del agro chileno, en este trabajo se analiza el desarrollo del proceso de formación de villorrios agrícolas en la Comuna de Curicó, junto con sus implicancias teórico-conceptuales y socio-políticas.
