The research was carried out from a semiotic point of view and as a social phenomenon, which goes beyond -and does not entail exclusively- the qualities of a specific architectonical production. Identify is expressed in the degree of communication which the architecture is able to stablish with the layman. Such communication may be regarded as a nonverbal language and thus it can be submitted to a semiotic analysis to verify its semiotic behavior as a social product. En un período de investigación de tres años, financiado por FONDECYT, se estudió el fenómeno de la identidad arquitectónica de la arquitectura de Chile central, desde la semiótica y como un fenómeno social que trasciende - y no implica exclusivamente- las cualidades mismas de una determinada producción arquitectónica. La identidad se manifestaría en el grado de comunicación que la arquitectura es capaz de establecer con el público lego, la cual, al ser susceptible de ser considerada como un lenguaje -del tipo no verbal-, permite un análisis semiológico para verificar su comportamiento semiótico como producto social.
