Sažetak:This paper deals with urban public spaces and their contribution to build social identity, a sense of belonging and public and private trust. The aim is to contribute to a technical and political debate on urban coexistence, this is done through the inhabitants and users´ perceptions and hopes. The inhabitants show low levels of trust, they set a low value on anything that is communitarian and have a high sense of insecurity in a city like Santiago which is socially and spatially segregated (Rodriguez & Winchester 1999). Nevertheless, amongst their hopes, Chileans express the need to strengthen the sense of community. This study concentrates in three cases of public spaces and a distinction was made between users and dwellers of the surrounding areas. The public spaces are two large parks in Santiago - Parque Forestal and Parque de los Reyes- and a small plaza, designed and built privately in Calama.
