Resumo:It is said that the adequate and opportune information handling, either, as knowledge and/or mean of communication, allows a better comprehension of the problems associated to the residential habitat and grants an adequate response to those problems. It is taken as a foundation for the elaboration of new proposals to improve the policies, programs and/or projects. It is proposed that an efficient handling of the information supports the process of public-private decision making in respect to the planning and intervention of the residential habitat that, strengthens the citizens and allows a better social control of its management and administration. The information concepts and information systems are presented in a context of a well informed society in relation how wide spread are the information technologies and knowledge (TIC). This discussion was taken as a starting point to develop the structure of a Housing Information System for its implementation. It also accounts the current knowledge advance generated by the INVI. It organizes and gives perspective to the academic work, making it coherent with the Strategic Plan for institutional development.
