In many cases, an increasing inequality results in socioeconomic residential segregation, generating gaps among the different groups of a community. This phenomenon is expanding in Latin America. In cities of considerable size, experiences from integration and improving interventions in slum areas are mostly enriching. However, what kind of strategies should be used in intermediate cities, with low financing possibilities and limited budget? This article analyzes the development of these processes in Ibagué, Colombia, and tries to find applicable strategies derived from a university cooperation project. The article establishes an approach to the aspects that contribute towards the formation of informal settlements and its possible links to socioeconomic residential segregation. It also studies, by using Las Delicias neighborhood as reference, the development of slum areas in Ibagué. The article concludes proposing a cooperation project for neighborhood improvement in those areas. El acelerado crecimiento urbano ha provocado, entre otras cosas, el incremento de los asentamientos informales en las periferias latinoamericanas y el aumento de la desigualdad urbana. Una desigualdad creciente que provoca, en muchos casos, una segregación residencial socioeconómica que implica un distanciamiento de los distintos grupos de población que conforman una comunidad. Un fenómeno que se encuentra en aumento en el contexto latinoamericano. En ciudades de tamaño considerable, las experiencias obtenidas en intervenciones de integración y mejoramiento de estos sectores suelen ser enriquecedoras. Sin embargo, ¿qué estrategias podrían ser aplicadas en ciudades intermedias con bajas posibilidades de financiación y presupuestos limitados? Este artículo indaga en el desarrollo de estos procesos en la ciudad de Ibagué-Colombia e intenta encontrar algunas estrategias aplicables desde el diseño de un proyecto de cooperación universitaria. En un inicio establece una aproximación a los aspectos que han fomentado la reproducción de los asentamientos informales en el contexto y sus posibles relaciones con la presencia de segregación residencial socio-económica. Posteriormente, estudia el proceso evolutivo de los asentamientos informales en Ibagué y toma al barrio Las Delicias como laboratorio de experimentación. Finalmente, se plantea un proyecto de cooperación para el mejoramiento barrial de estos sectores.
