This article discusses the history of the reflection about the City as a specific form of social organization, attempting to delineate an overview that goes back to the emergence of a more specific scientific thinking about the City as a social form since the 19th century, which underwent a particular development in the 20th century. At a second moment it discusses the use of images in the construction of knowledge about the City. In relation to this aspect, the article’s goal is to present an analysis of the several models of the City in 20th century urbanistic thought in the Social and Human Sciences, including Sociology, Anthropology and, more particularly, History.Key words: city, Social Sciences, image. Das análises da Cidade de uma perspectiva institucional às análises do fenômeno urbano como complexidade histórico-social, inúmeras foram as contribuições de historiadores e cientistas sociais para a compreensão das questões urbanas no decorrer dos séculos XIX e XX. Este artigo busca discutir a história da refl exão sobre a Cidade como forma específi ca de organização social, atentando para a elaboração de uma visão panorâmica que remonta ao surgimento de um pensamento científico mais específico sobre a cidade como forma social desde o século XIX e que, particularmente, adquire especial desenvolvimento no século XX. Em um segundo momento, discute-se o uso das imagens na construção do conhecimento sobre a Cidade, e, em relação a este aspecto, o objetivo do texto é elaborar uma análise dos vários modelos de Cidade ao longo da reflexão urbanística do século XX nas Ciências Sociais e Humanas, incluindo a Sociologia, a Antropologia e mais particularmente a História.Palavras-chave: cidade, Ciências Sociais, imagem.
