description This research presents the initial contacts between artists and architects under the wing of the architectural avant-garde’s ideas. It also investigates the dissemination of its texts, as well as the expansion of the principles of the Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM) in Chile. The aim of the article is to examine the contacts between the French and Chilean artistic avant-garde by addressing concomitant themes, the intersections between art and architecture, and the main ways of the penetration of modern ideas. The methodology involved the historiographic identification of the texts transmitted from France to Chile, the specification of their main ideas, and the debates that enabled their adoption and adaptation. The paper reviews the role of specialized dissemination between 1923 and 1936 in two publications: the section “Notas de Arte” (Art Notes) (1923- 1927) in the newspaper La Nación and the magazine ARQuitectura (1935-1936), both published under particular initiatives interested in renewing and updating the Chilean artistic scene. On their pages these two publications gathered Chilean artists and architects who had in common a strong interest in the actions of the European avant-garde, thereby constructing a body of argument that closely linked art and architecture. As a consequence of the circulation of these texts, the city, at that time an organism on the verge of obsolescence, received increased attention. Here, the CIAM debate was addressed by its main protagonists – Le Corbusier, for example –, thus envisaging the applicability of its ideas in Chile. Specifically, the texts reveal that during the 1930s the absence of organized collective housing – a focal point for hygienic, social and formal problems – fostered the execution of large contemporary housing complexes determined by modern ideas. Keywords: artistic avant-garde, architecture magazines, modern architecture.
