Gaia: | This work presents the development of a spring and chain scale model whose purpose is to function as a form finding method for steel cable tensile structures. The models’ concept was created through the examination of this structural design methodology, initially elaborated by the German architect Frei Otto. It was also based on the review of the critical literature on the development of steel cable systems technologies. Throughout this work, different possibilities of materials and measurement methods of the physical models were investigated, which had the aim of providing qualitative data about steel cable structural system’s behavior. In order to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the spring and chain model, numerical Force Density methods were developed simultaneously. Finally, the results obtained through the two form finding methods were compared, with the purpose of understanding the advantages and limits of their applications.
