| Summary: | This article presents the results of the application of a descriptive theory of the urban space, as proposed by Bill Hillier and colleagues (1984), to study two Brazilian cities: Porto Alegre and Recife. The concepts of the theory of the Social Logic o f Space (Hillier & Hanson, 1984), and its associated methods, are adopted to analyse the morphology of the central area of the two cities and its patterns of social use of the urban space. The study is also informed by the concepts of elem entary-m atrixand matrix-course, developed by Cannigia & Maffei (1981), as form ative elements of the urban tissue, over and above geometrical order |
