These studies adopt different approaches which are, in part, a result of the three areas of knowledge in the program of the faculty: History, Project and Technology. This diversity in approach and focus is also a result of the political, economic and cultural development of the country and its implications in different periods, as well as of the introduction of foreign ideas. In ad dition to these factors, the acceleration of urban growth, especially in São Paulo and in other large Brazilian cities, has made the problems of housing much more visible and alarming, thus stimulating diverseb points of view in the academic production encountered 0 curso de pós-graduação da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanism o da Universidade de São Paulo - FAUUSP produziu uma série de dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado, tendo por tema habitação. Essa produção caracterizou-se por uma ampla gama de enfoques, em parte decorrentes das três áreas de conhecimento que caracterizam a estrutura da FAU: Projeto, História e Estética de Projeto e Tecnologia, que se refletem no curso de pós graduação. Além dessas grandes áreas, o próprio desenvolvim ento político, econômico e cultural do país, determinadas épocas e períodos, a influência estrangeira, o crescimento acelerado da população urbana do país, transformações na metrópole paulistana e em outras grandes cidades brasileiras, tornando mais visíveis e preocupante s os problemas habitacionais, contribuíram para privilegiar dentro da habitação diferentes recortes.
