Description
Summary:In 1788, Quatremère de Quincy (Paris, 1755 – 1849), who, by then, was making himself known within the erudite debate circles of French art, was commissioned to elaborate the Dictionnaire d’Architecture for the Encyclopédie Méthodique, by editor Panckoucke. The original work was published in three tomes (between 1788 and 1825), and, in 1832, its author redistributed and condensed it in two volumes in the Dictionnaire Historique d’Architecture. The article discussed the reasons why this textual genre, which separates themes by entries and is published in fascicles, was elected to convey articles related to architectural theory to various classes of readers. The objective was refine not only architects’ tastes, but also the literate public’s tastes.
