Leon Battista Alberti, the first scholar to theorize on the" Brunelleschian invention" in the realm of painting (De Pictura), proscribes this resource in his De Re Aedificatoria, arguing against illusionism in architectural drawing. Throughout the centuries, perspective gained other meanings, yet not much different from its original intention. This text analyzes the reasons behind its historical permanence and finds common ground for opinions in favor of and against its artistic legitimacy. A perspectiva exata, técnica de representação gráfica adotada na arquitetura, tem sido alvo de inúmeras controvérsias, desde o renascimento italiano. Leon Battista Alberti, primeiro tratadista a teorizar a" invenção brunelleschiana", prescritível à pintura (De Pictura), no De Re Aedificatoria interdita seu recurso, investindo contra o ilusionismo nos desenhos de arquitetura. Ao longo dos séculos, a perspectiva se revestiu de significados outros, pouco contrastados ao das primícias. É propósito do presente estudo perscrutar razões de sua permanência histórica, assinalando, sob juízos pró e contra sua legitimidade artística, um" solo comum" em que se irmanam.
