Summary: | Making use of strategic planning, within which large-scale urban projects of monumental urbanism and signature architecture are fostered, many cities have been greatly transformed in recent years. Bilbao is one of them. The Guggenheim Museum, designed by architect Frank Gehry, has prompted the so-called" Bilbao effect", projecting the city image internationally into the business world. The museum has become the main icon of the Spanish Bask capital. However, the city has also promoted other projects, by also signature architects, adding more symbolic value - and thus monopoly rents - to the city. Understanding the role of large-scale urban interventions - or a" monumental patriotic urbanism" - to Bilbao's urban development is the main objective of this paper. |
