Sumari: | Based on the novel A laodicean (1881, Thomas Hardy) this article comments on the architectural practice in nineteenth-century Britain, focusing on fundamental issues such as the architectural profession, the battle of styles, preservation and restoration. In this sense, the biographical aspects of the novel stand out, mainly the work of Hardy as architect, as restorer and as a member of William Morris' Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Finally, few hypotheses are listed in order to understand the contemporary image and profession of the architect. |
