In this sense, the biographical aspects of the novel stand out, mainly the work of Hardy as architect, as restorer and as a member of William Morris' Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Finally, few hypotheses are listed in order to understand the contemporary image and profession of the architect. A partir do romance A laodicean (1881), de Thomas Hardy, o presente artigo propõe um comentário sobre a prática da arquitetura na Inglaterra do século XIX, centrado em temas fundamentais como a profissionalização dos arquitetos, a batalha dos estilos e a preservação e restauro de edifícios. Neste percurso, ressalta-se o caráter biográfico do romance, nos termos da atuação de Hardy como arquiteto, como restaurador de igrejas e como membro da Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) fundada por William Morris. Finalizando, sugerem-se hipóteses para compreender a acepção, na história contemporânea, da profissão e da imagem do arquiteto. Universidade de São Paulo.
