Sumario:This paper explores the aftermaths in the architecture of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, of two fundamental issues in the international and national architectural debate of the 1950/60s: the manifestation of a Brutalist sensibility and the concerns for the integration between art and architecture. The modern architecture produced in Pernambuco was not isolated and crystallized, but inclined to assimilate other national and international influences. Through the work of Vital Pessoa de Melo, we attempt to establish relationships between the ethics/aesthetics of brutalism and the geometrical and spatial combinations of the artistic vanguards and show how they can be integrated in an architecture embodied with an ethic, artistic and cultural sense.
