Several researches have focused on the metropolitan region of São Paulo as its central topic, trying to understand, basically, some of its social and economical aspects. In the awake of the 21th century, however, there are few of them that emphasize the importance of São Paulo in the new world economy. Although there are enormous contrasts between Developed and Developing countries, we aim at showing here, some clear evidences that the process of globalization is getting shape particularly through the tertiary and quaternary activities (Advanced producer services). The present essay will point, therefore, some of the new roles played by this metropolis that contributes to its insertion in a selected universe of world or global cities. A região metropolitana de São Paulo tem sido objeto de inúmeras pesquisas urbanas voltadas para o entendimento das relações socioeconômicas dos diferentes agentes envolvidos. No início do século 21 têm sido reduzidas, contudo, as abordagens que enfatizam a inserção de São Paulo no novo contexto econômico mundial. Mais do que enfatizar o caráter excludente e os enormes contrastes preexistentes nas cidades semiperiféricas do sistema capitalista mundial, pretendemos tão-somente apontar algumas evidências de que o processo de globalização vem tomando corpo sobre o território por meio das atividades terciárias e quaternárias(serviços produtivos avançados) aí exercidas. O presente ensaio objetiva discursar, portanto, sobre os distintos papéis contemporâneos desempenhados por esta metrópole que a colocam no cenário internacional integrando-a, assim, em um seleto universo de cidades mundiais ou globais.
