Sumario:The objective of this article is to describe the contribution of the medical doctor Geraldo Horácio de Paula Souza in the history of brazilian urbanism. This doctor worked in the city of São Paulo where he headed the Sanitary Service of the State Government between 1922 and 1927, and displayed a comprehensive understanding of the cities urban problems. He adopted an approach for hygiene in the city which was different from those of his predecessors: he intended to promote hygiene less through large sanitary urban infrastructural projects and more through the education of individuals in order to change their hygienic habits and thus achieving a better hygienic environment. The article stresses the important contribution of Dr. Paula Souza in stimulating an awareness, in the late 1920s, of the city’s need to prepare itself for imminent development and the industrialization of the following decades.
