It explores the defense of the public space as a meeting place for individuals, and as the preeminently place to develop the citizen condition, finally as the structuring component of urban spatiality. This article shows that, when its structuring task on space and social condition is denied, it leads to the construction of an unequal, deficient and excluding periphery. Se aborda el tema del espacio público en la periferia de la ciudad de Bogotá, a partir del estudio de la relación que tiene con la vivienda. De esta manera se explora la defensa del espacio público como lugar de encuentro y de desarrollo de la vida ciudadana por excelencia, a la vez que como elemento estructurante de la espacialidad urbana. A través del artículo se demuestra cómo el espacio público al no ser reconocido como estructurante espacial y social, conduce a la construcción de una periferia deficitaria, inequitativa y excluyente.
