Summary:This paper explores the symbolic and material appropriation of the norpatagónico territory, and its projection in the urbanizations that are delineated. To do this, we reviewed two institutions from the sixteenth century to the present: the State (Spanishcrown and national State) and the Catholic Church, which graphed a space whose marks of meaning are embodied in current practices. From both perspectives we will ask ourselves about the territorial appropriation associated with the dynamics of territorialization, urbanization and social conformation. We observe the period that begins at the end of the 19th century with the National Territories and the Apostolic Vicariate, pointing out the tension between the colonial period (between the 16th century and the beginning of the 19th century) and the provincialization of the territory (until the middle of the 20th century). We consider a turning point to change the vision of the territory from the transversality, observable to the state conquest, and its reorientation towards the Atlantic, supporting a vertical conception.
