Summary:Leisure and the use of free time have recently become some of the most important activities within the new lifestyle of contemporary citizens, just as the promotion of these activities has been used as a strategy carried out by local public administrations to renovate urban spaces. This article presents a reflection on the consumption of gastronomic leisure as the main instrument of renovation and recovery in urban spaces and, consequently, a strategy of gentrification and generation of social distinctions. Some cases of success are presented, with an emphasis on the recovery process of Bairro Alto and the area of Las Docas in Lisbon and concludes with some considerations and lessons for current gentrification processes.
