Summary:Measuring urban sustainability is a task of great relevance if it depends on the development of the city, therefore, the importance of having a method that approaches reality with the least possible margin of error. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the urban sustainability index and propose an improvement in its calculation method. For this, a brief review is made in Scopus about the academic production about this topic. Then the theoretical consequences evidenced after the review and use of the Human Development Index as a sample of urban unsustainability are highlighted, demarcating the importance of having an adequate instrument to measure urban sustainability. Subsequently, the Peruvian case is problematized and the example of Metropolitan Lima is used to explain that the use of the harmonic average is the most adequate to calculate the urban sustainability index.
