Sumario:The design of the new architectural skins has been developed to such an extent that, it can be said, the possibilities have exceeded the building's own needs. With new materials, finishes, textures, colors, lights, artistic and ‘hypermedial’ treatments, the new envelopes tend to meet different types of requests, both internal to buildings and external to the urban environment. The starting hypothesis is that the presence of buildings today is not only trusted in matter. Dematerialization and virtuality are characteristics of an urban environment that is implemented with digital technologies and where building envelopes acquire a new role. They are conceived as actors of the changing urban scene, as dynamic entities and not as static and passive elements. This paper tries to distinguish the new behaviors of the architectural envelopes as an integral part of a performative conception of the contemporary urban environment and the implications of the new technologies in this regard.
