Resumo:Metropolization in Latin American cities in the capitalist context is determined by the processes of urban fragmentation linked to the growth and expansion of cities. This article approaches the metropolitan functioning of southern Medellín and the Aburrá Valley, based on an approach from the local and peripheral scale, which allows us to understand the fragmented structure of the territory as part of a city production mode based on fragment differentiation and socio-spatial segregation. In this way, the focus on the municipality of La Estrella, exemplifies the ways in which metropolitan fragmentation operates as part of a contradictory process in the production of space.
