Regarding the production function, the operational vision and short-time approach tend to be even more emphasized, sometimes leading to mistakes in investiments that can affect the company financial survival. This paper discusses the formulation of the production strategy in the building industry, emphasizing the adaptation of concepts related to the content of strategic plans. This study is based on case studies carried out in small-sized building companies from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. As empresas de construção habitacional tradicionalmente são dirigidas com base em decisões estratégicas tomadas a partir da experiência e intuição de seus dirigentes. Isto faz com que as empresas invistam pouco em processos formais de planejamento estratégico e tenham uma posição competitiva reativa em relação ao mercado. Quando se trata da função produção, a visão operacional e de curto prazo é ainda mais enfatizada, resultando, algumas vezes, em erros de investimentos que podem comprometer a sobrevivência financeira da empresa. Diante disso, este artigo pretende discutir a formulação de estratégias de produção na construção de edificações, dando ênfase à adaptação dos conceitos relacionados ao conteúdo estratégico como forma de despertar o setor para a importância estratégica da produção. Este trabalho está baseado em estudos de caso realizados em pequenas empresas de construção do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.
