Sumario:This paper presents a discussion about the role of building water supply systems for the achievement of environmental sustainability, focussing on the natural water resources. Initially, the importance of environmental sustainability is analysed, and several possible actions regarding the nature and the use of building water supply systems for promoting sustainability are discussed. Considering those actions, some models for managing such actions are proposed, which allow their benefits, risks and costs to be evaluated. At the conclusion, the results of some simulations that illustrate the effects of water conservation actions are discussed. Keywords: environmental sustainability; water conservation; water supply systems; water resources.
