These indexes were gathered from theoretical studies and from a water consumption audit in buildings. The stages of the water audits and the methods used for leakage detection are also presented. The results indicate that high indexes of water leakage and loss were detected in water closet cisterns. It is highlighted that leaks in water closet cisterns can be the cause of approximately 30% of water waste in buildings. Este artigo apresenta índices de perda de água por vazamentos provenientes de componentes de utilização e de sistemas de reservação de água de cinco edifícios residenciais multifamiliares de Goiânia. Para a obtenção desses índices foram utilizados dados de trabalhos teóricos e realizadas auditorias do consumo de água nos edifícios. São apresentadas as etapas das auditorias e os métodos utilizadas na detecção dos vazamentos. Os resultados obtidos apresentam elevados índices de vazamento e de perda de água detectados em bacias sanitárias com caixa de descarga. Ressaltam que os vazamentos em bacias sanitárias com caixa de descarga podem ser responsáveis por cerca de 30 % do desperdício de água em edifícios.
