The characterization of meters and the study of the interactions of its elements with plumbing systems have been carried out, based on both systems and the building performance approaches. Considering the need for improving both qualitative and quantitative data collection on water consumption, which is essential for demand management, especially in a context of rational water usage, different systems and technologies for remote reading have been investigated. A proposal for planning the submetering implementation is described, indicating the elements that shall be considered for demand management. A case study on the submetering program at the University of São Paulo was undertaken, in which it was possible to confirm its importance and to observe the extremely positive results that had justified its implementation. Este trabalho discute a utilização da medição setorizada como instrumento de gestão da demanda de água em sistemas prediais. A caracterização dos medidores e a avaliação das interações dos elementos de medição com o sistema de suprimento de água fria e de equipamento sanitário foram realizadas, a partir de um enfoque sistêmico e da abordagem de desempenho de edificações. Considerando a coleta de melhores informações do consumo de água, qualitativa e quantitativamente, que é essencial para a gestão da sua demanda, especialmente em um contexto de ações de uso racional da água, foram investigados alguns sistemas e tecnologias de telemedição. Apresenta-se uma proposta de planejamento de implantação da medição setorizada, indicando os elementos que devem ser observados para a realização da gestão da demanda. Foi realizado um estudo de caso de medição setorizada na Universidade de São Paulo, no qual foi possível constatar a importância da sua aplicação e os resultados extremamente positivos que justificaram sua implantação.
