Sumario:The text exposes the dissemination of architecture, urban planning and city issues through the so-called congresos de mejoras nacionales [urban improvement congresses] held between 1917 and 1946, a  period in which Ricardo Olano Estrada, an important character of the Antioquian elite, an untrained urban planner and the main promoter of these events, maintained active participation. The work is based on documentary research, whose objective is to contribute to the architectural and urbanistic interpretations of the modern city of Medellín between 1926 and 1947 from the discourses of Ricardo Olano Estrada. Methodologically, two stages are carried out: the first one arises from a bibliographic review on the problem, and the second one, from the search of archival material and specialized serial journals of the time, having as main source the Revista Progreso, the dissemination organ of the Sociedad de Mejoras Públicas of Medellín  [Public Improvement Society of Medellin] The results presented in the text have a national implication, that is, they are only of potential interest for the history of urban planning in Colombia
