As documental sources, the plans constitute a primary source, they show the land use by the constructions, and they are the graphic representation of the physical-space evolution of the city. The plans harbor a history to refer, only recoverable through the reading and writing of what is represented as images. This investigation outlines the storing of cartographic information fundamentally, and, starting from the inventory of the plans of the city of Pasto, carries out a graphic interpretation of this plans to give a version of the urban evolution of the city. Starting with the compilation of the cartographic documents journey s carried out and comparative study that defines the main differences in chronological order, to outline a characterization of the cartographic evolution of the city. En este artículo se presentan los resultados de la investigación sobre cartografía de la ciudad de Pasto, con una reflexión que comprende planos con valiosa información acerca del momento histórico y el crecimiento urbano. Como fuentes documentales, los planos constituyen una fuente primaria, muestran la ocupación de las construcciones, y son la representación gráfica de la evolución físico-espacial de la ciudad. Los planos albergan una historia que contar, y solo es recuperable a través de la lectura y escritura de lo que representan como imágenes. Esta investigación plantea fundamentalmente el acopio de información cartográfica, y, a partir del inventario de los planos de la ciudad de Pasto, realiza una interpretación gráfica de los mismos para dar cuenta de la evolución urbana de la ciudad. Partiendo de la compilación de los documentos cartográficos se realiza un recorrido y estudio comparativo que define las principales diferencias en orden cronológico, para plantear una caracterización de la evolución cartográfica de la ciudad.
