Also, the construction of underground works is a risky activity by itself. All these factors have been causes in not considering certain underground solutions to solve problems at the surface. Nevertheless, in the last twenty years, the underground engineering has reached important developments in technology and construction methods, which allow nowadays the execution of interesting, secure and environmental solutions in many big conurbations. The present article presents some arguments and shows the actual state of the art and technology in this field, in order to promote a more intensively underground space usage for solving diverse and common problems on the surface. Las afectaciones ambientales en las que el uso del espacio subterráneo puede incurrir son principalmente la modificación de las condiciones del agua subterránea y la perturbación de la superficie por el mismo proceso constructivo y por la disposición final del material excavado. Asimismo, la construcción de las obras subterráneas es una actividad riesgosa por sí sola. Todos estos factores han causado en el pasado el no poder considerar algunas soluciones subterráneas para solucionar problemas en la superficie. No obstante, en los últimos veinte años, la ingeniería subterránea tuvo importantes desarrollos en tecnología y métodos constructivos, que permiten hoy en día la ejecución de soluciones interesantes, seguras y ambientales en muchas conurbaciones. El presente artículo presenta algunos argumentos y muestra el estado actual de conocimiento y tecnología en este campo, con el fin de promover un mayor e intensivo uso del espacio subterráneo para resolver diversos y comunes problemas en la superficie. Finalmente, se resaltan aspectos sociales, culturales y de tecnología que deben cumplirse para que a corto plazo las conurbaciones colombianas puedan beneficiarse de soluciones dentro del espacio subterráneo para los problemas actuales de superficie.
