Acoustic map as tool for assessment of vehicular traffic noise in Aracaju – Brazil

The traffic noise is one of the major issues affecting human health and well-being in urban environments. This paper shows an application of acoustical map as a tool for evaluating noise of urban vehicular traffic with acoustic simulations (Predictor software, version 9.0 - Brüel & Kjær). Th...

The traffic noise is one of the major issues affecting human health and well-being in urban environments. This paper shows an application of acoustical map as a tool for evaluating noise of urban vehicular traffic with acoustic simulations (Predictor software, version 9.0 - Brüel & Kjær). The study object was a stretch of Av. Augusto Franco, an important avenue in the urban area of the city of Aracaju, Brazil. The acoustic modeling and simulations were based on acoustics measurements, and traffic and geometric data collected in November/December 2013 and June 2014. The results were discussed on the basis of acoustic maps of the current scenario, followed by the creation and simulation of hypothetical scenarios of vehicle flow and composition. There have been done comparative analyses between acoustic descriptors from the maps with Municipal Legislation, International, and National Standards, besides the technical literature of urban noise. The results reveal the existence of traffic noise impact in the analyzed area, which may cause discomfort or even adverse health effects in the exposed population. This study indicates the importance of developing acoustic maps for analysis of environmental noise through various scenarios with changing traffic characteristics of a given region to obtain better conditions of acoustic comfort in cities and support the decision making of urban public policy.
