Achoimre:In architecture, the spatial appropriation process may be facilitated by spaces qualified for users, with environmental aspects that provide well-being. The research, in the theme of schoolyard architecture, aimed to analyze the courtyard of public elementary schools, according to the student's point of view. The focus was given to the schoolyard as a leisure and learning environment. We investigated and characterized the quality of free areas and the built environment, analyzing the relations of use and appropriation of these spaces. Based on the recognition of the importance of the schoolyard as a referential recurrence in the perception of users, it is possible to consider the schoolyard as a place of socialization, exchange ,and acquaintanceship, as well as exploration and experimentation. The developed literature review indicated the possible elements capable of facilitating the appropriation of the schoolyards by students. The article presents the evaluation carried out in two public institutions of primary education located in the municipality of Palmitinho - Rio Grande do Sul, with emphasis on applied analysis tools: cognitive map and poem of desires. The participation of users determined to be fundamental for space quality acquisition.
