Sammanfattning:With the appearance of the first computers in history, a range of new possibilities was present in contemporary society, generating a whole variety of new scenarios, both for research and for teaching. A new way of seeing and understanding the world was born, with strong technological changes and an unusual access to different fields of knowledge, generating a process called Alvin Toffler’s “Future Shock”. Conservation and rehabilitation of the architectural and urban heritage are not exempt from new approaches in this context. Their specific field is being influenced by new theories and technologies. From these assumptions, and with a look that focuses on digital technology, this paper aims to show the advantages of its use as an exploratory tool for complex structures, able to build and relate simplified representations of the real world, helping to understand, investigate and interpret the architectural and urban qualities of a city in a determinate historical period. To do so, case-studies are proposed, exploiting the potential of an efficient and functional instrument of analysis, which contributes to the collective construction of knowledge for future generations.
