| Sumario: | Uruguay is a country with a strong tourist vocation since the beginning of the twentieth century in summer tourism, centered primarily on the Atlantic and Atlantic coastline. A planning process began following the common guidelines of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), similar to other Latin American countries. Based on the work of the Commission on Investment and Economic Development (CIDE), the first regionalization of tourist areas in the country is defined, taking as a starting point the diagnoses made by this Commission in 1963 and the design of the first economic development plan for the period 1965-1974. This plan has the value of being the first to formulate but also acquires the value of becoming the matrix of subsequent plans.This article aims to analyse how this first regionalization aspired to diversify the tourist offer of the country by incorporating new areas of the territory that will expand the tourist activity in the country. At the same time, it will be established how the concept of "regionalization" linked to diversification remained in force throughout the 20th century, beyond the political changes that took place. As well as the importance that still conserves not only conceptually but also from the actions undertaken at present in the Uruguayan tourist system.
