This is, however, a characteristic that escapes architecture’s control since it depends solely on users’ abilities to appropriate space –something that can’t be scientifically measured or known ahead of time. This contradiction is particularly expressed within the condition of domestic dwelling.We have to question the contemporary meaning and possibility –or impossibility– of dwelling in a world where to reside is not limited to having a street address, where one spends more time commuting than at one’s own home, where thousands of people migrate to other lands because of political or economic reasons, and where our relationships with other people take place in the virtual space of social networks.The increasingly obvious insertion of the subject that experiences domestic space as a way to evaluate the architectural work; the careful study of that experience as raw material for design; in addition to the participation of the user in the design and construction process are strategies to disarming architecture as an artistic practice –to leave its very traces in the very matter that makes up the home. These appear to us as possibilities for dwelling in the present. Despite this, many of these cases lack a critical evaluation. En la definición más pura de la arquitectura encontramos que la posibilidad de habitarla es el rasgo que la distingue de las otras artes; sin embargo, es ésta una característica que siempre escapa a su control, ya que depende enteramente de las prácticas de apropiación espacial de las personas –algo que no se puede medir científicamente ni conocer de antemano. Esta contradicción se manifiesta especialmente en el caso del habitar doméstico.Hay que cuestionarse el significado actual y la posibilidad –o imposibilidad– del habitar en un mundo en el que la residencia no está fija en un solo domicilio, en el que se pasa más tiempo en los traslados que en la propia casa, en el que miles de personas migran a otros territorios por razones políticas o económicas y en el que nuestras relaciones con otras personas suceden en el espacio virtual de las redes sociales.La introducción cada vez más clara del sujeto que experimenta el espacio doméstico en la valoración de la obra arquitectónica y el estudio cuidadoso de esta experiencia como materia prima para el diseño, además de la participación del sujeto en el proceso de diseño y de la construcción, son estrategias para desarmar la arquitectura como institución artística –para imprimir las huellas en la propia materia de la casa. Éstas se nos presentan como posibilidades para el habitar en el presente.
