The significance of these radiations and their interaction with matter are simply explained so that architects have the tools to design energy efficient building envelopes that are appropriate for their program. En este artículo se describe la radiación solar que llega a la Tierra, en especial la parte espectral del ultravioleta y el infrarrojo, que son la parte no visible de dicha radiación. Se expone la importancia deéstas y su interacción con la materia, de forma sencilla, para que el arquitecto tenga herramientas para diseñar una envolvente de un edificio que sea energéticamente eficiente y adecuada para su uso.
